С 2022 года (2020 г. для некоторых регионов) ЕГЭ по английскому языку будет введён в число обязательных экзаменов наряду с экзаменами по математике и русскому языку. Но и сейчас вопрос подготовки к ЕГЭ по английскому языку является актуальным для многих учащихся. Хорошие баллы по нему (не ниже четвёрки, т. е. 59-83 балла) требуются при поступлении во многие вузы на факультеты филологической направленности. Имеет смысл сдавать этот экзамен и тем, кто не собирается связывать свою жизнь с языком: во-первых, именно у ЕГЭ по английскому языку самый высокий процент успешной сдачи (выше 22 баллов), а во-вторых, английский наверняка пригодится вам в течение жизни, и подготовка к ЕГЭ обеспечит вас необходимыми знаниями.

К сожалению, подготовиться к ЕГЭ по английскому не так уж просто. Специалисты советуют начинать за два года или за один, если на данный момент уровень вашего владения языком не ниже Intermediate.

Для уверенной сдачи экзамена нужен английский Upper-Intermediate уровня, а он не обеспечивается школьной программой. Условия выполнения заданий в ЕГЭ имеют свою специфику, и если вы не потренируетесь на настоящих заданиях, которые можно найти на сайте Федерального института педагогических измерений, например или в Открытом банке заданий ЕГЭ , вы можете обнаружить, что не состоянии выполнить все требования.

Ниже я расскажу, как сдаётся ЕГЭ по английскому языку , из каких частей и заданий состоит, чего можно ожидать на экзамене. Также я дам полезные советы по выполнению заданий английского ЕГЭ в каждом из его разделов.

Условия сдачи ЕГЭ по английскому языку

Сдать ЕГЭ по английскому языку на минимальный приемлемый балл не так уж сложно: для этого нужно набрать всего 22 балла. За каждую из частей экзамена, если выполнить её идеально, даётся по 20 баллов. Совсем плохо вы ЕГЭ по английскому не сдадите: ответы на некоторые из заданий нужно выбирать из ограниченного числа вариантов, так что по теории вероятности кое-какие правильные ответы у вас будут, даже если вы проставите их наугад.

Следует помнить, что «стоят» разные задания по-разному. Так, за правильное прочтение небольшого текста вслух вы получите всего лишь один балл, а хорошо написанное эссе может принести вам 14. С учётом этого можно распределять свои силы при подготовке; но не следует забывать и о том, что многие из навыков и умений, требуемых в одних частях экзамена, пригодятся и в других. Так, без знания и без обширного лексического запаса вы вряд ли сможете или понять, о чём говорится в диалоге, который вы .

Экзамен сдаётся в два приёма, причём только одна из его частей, письменная, является обязательной. К сожалению, она принесёт вам только 80 баллов, а ещё 20 вы можете получить за устную, основной этап которой отнимает всего 15 минут. Записавшись на устную часть, вы ничего не теряете, зато получаете возможность добрать необходимый балл.

На экзамене вам обязательно понадобится документ, удостоверяющий личность (паспорт), и чёрная ручка. Ручку желательно использовать ярко пишущую – капиллярную, гелевую или перьевую. Связано это с тем, что ваши ответы будут отсканированы и отправлены на машинное распознавание. Если вы напишете их шариковой ручкой или другим цветом, программа может определить их неправильно, и вы потеряете драгоценные баллы. Помочь вам в таком случае сможет только апелляция – запрос на перепроверку результатов экзамена.

Вы не имеете права проносить с собой в аудиторию что-либо помимо указанных предметов. Под запретом любые электронные девайсы, тетради, книги, корректоры. Если вам понадобится выйти, за вами проследует и кто-то из экзаменаторов. Попытки мошенничества будут строго караться: процесс сдачи вами ЕГЭ будет прерван, и решение о том, допустят ли вас до пересдачи, будет принимать специальная комиссия.

В случае, если по уважительной причине (у вас должны быть документальные свидетельства, например, справка из медицинского учреждения) вы не сможете сдать ЕГЭ вместе со всеми, вам может быть позволено сделать это позже, в резервный период.

Структура ЕГЭ по английскому языку

Как уже было сказано, ЕГЭ по английскому языку состоит из обязательной (письменной) и необязательной (устной) частей, которые сдаются в разные дни. Письменная часть сдаётся в общей аудитории и длится 3 часа. Для сдачи устной вас в порядке случайно составленной очереди пригласят в кабинет, где есть всё необходимое оборудование. Длительность самого экзамена – всего 15 минут.

Письменная часть ЕГЭ подразделяется на четыре секции: аудирование, чтение, грамматика и лексика, письмо. На каждый из разделов вам выделяется определённое время, в течение же этого времени вы вольны сами распределять, в каком порядке будете выполнять задания. Отчасти это не касается аудирования, где выполнение задания во многом привязано к прослушиванию текста.

Аудирование (Listening)

На аудировании вам дадут прослушать три аудиофрагмента, соответствующие трём заданиям этого раздела. Это могут быть как монологи, так и диалоги на самые разнообразные темы (в основном, бытовые). Во время проигрывания аудиозапись не останавливается, но при этом тексты на каждое задание звучат по два раза, и между ними сделаны паузы, в которые сдающие должны ознакомиться с письменной частью задания и записать свои ответы.

Вариант произношения, который вы услышите на аудировании, – британский. Это создаёт дополнительные сложности при выполнении и без того непростых заданий. В школьной программе очень мало внимания уделяется просмотру видео или прослушиванию аудио на английском языке, а сами ученики, если и приобщаются к медиа-контенту в оригинале, обычно выбирают более многочисленные американские фильмы и сериалы, что в недостаточной мере способствует наращиванию банка британских голосов.

Задания, входящие в раздел «Аудирование»

Задание №1 . В первом задании вашему вниманию будут представлены 6 высказываний, которые нужно будет соотнести по смыслу с 7 утверждениями (одно утверждение – лишнее). Говорящие обозначены английскими буквами от A до F, утверждения – пронумерованы. Вам нужно будет в специальной табличке напротив каждой буквы указать номер соответствующего утверждения.

Задание №2 . Во втором задании вам придётся прослушать небольшой текст (скорее всего – диалог) и ознакомиться с семью утверждениями, обозначенными буквами от A до G. После этого вы в таблице поставите под каждой буквой одну из трёх цифр, 1, 2 или 3, где единица означает, что утверждение правдиво (True), двойка – что оно ложно (False), а тройка – что в тексте прозвучало недостаточно информации, чтобы определить правдивость или ложность утверждения (Not stated).

Задание №3 . Вам включают аудиозапись (например, интервью), вы внимательно её слушаете, читаете 7 неоконченных утверждений и для каждого из этих утверждений выбираете из трёх вариантов подходящую по смыслу концовку. Номер варианта вы записываете в предложенное поле.

  1. Тексты для аудирования и вопросы в заданиях составлены таким образом, чтобы учащиеся опирались на смысл услышанного, а не на выхваченные в потоке речи слова. Старайтесь понять, какую мысль пытается передать говорящий. Обратите внимание, что в первом задании наиболее важная для правильного ответа информация обычно звучит ближе к концу высказывания.
  2. Смотрите , желательно британские. Помогает пересматривать одни и те же сцены по несколько раз, причём сначала без субтитров и перевода, чтобы мозг не привыкал полагаться на печатный текст. Когда вы научитесь ориентироваться в звучании иностранной речи, можно переходить к источникам без визуальной составляющей: аудиокнигам, радиопередачам, . Последних существует огромное множество, начиная от и заканчивая художественными аудиосериалами, и среди них несложно найти подходящие вашему уровню. К некоторым из них также существуют официальные или неофициальные транскрипты (запись того, что прозвучало, в текстовом виде), что может облегчить приобщение.

Чтение (Reading)

В этом разделе ЕГЭ вам придётся доказать свою способность понять смысл незнакомого текста. Текстов, с которыми вам придётся иметь дело, довольно много, и два из них – относительно длинные (в районе страницы). На каждое задание у вас есть всего около 10 минут, поэтому полагаться на словарь у вас не получилось бы, даже если бы пользование им было разрешено.

Задания, входящие в раздел «Чтение»

Задание №1 . Вам предлагается прочесть 7 коротких, по 5-7 предложений, текстов, обычно связанных одной темой или представляющих собой абзацы одного текста. Ваша задача – подобрать к каждому из фрагментов текста один из 8 заголовков, указанных выше и отражающих их смысл. Один из заголовков является лишним.

Задание №2 . Во втором задании вы обнаружите текст, из которого было удалено 6 фрагментов (обычно завершающих начатое в тексте предложение). Удалённые фрагменты, к которым добавлен один лишний, в случайном порядке приведены ниже, и вам нужно определить, какой из них куда относится.

Задание №3 . В третьем задании вам придётся прочесть довольно объёмный текст. Под ним приведено 7 вопросов и незавершённых утверждений, к каждому из которых есть четыре варианта ответов. Вам нужно выбрать из них подходящий, опираясь не только на подробности прочитанного, но и на общее понимание авторской мысли и посыла, вложенного в текст.

  1. Как и в случае с аудированием, найти в тексте совпадающие с нужным вариантом ответа слова у вас получится далеко не всегда, а иногда такая стратегия может оказаться даже вредной. Старайтесь понять, какая мысль вкладывалась автором в каждый из фрагментов текста.
  2. При выполнении третьего задания полезно учесть, что вопросы к нему даются примерно в том порядке, в котором ответ на них можно найти в тексте.
  3. Когда вы вставляете в текст второго задания пропущенные фрагменты, имеет смысл опираться не только на суть предложения, но и на грамматическую сочетаемость различных его частей. Так, поставленная перед пропущенным фрагментом запятая скорее всего будет означать, что речь идёт о сложноподчинённом предложении, подчинённая часть которого присоединяется к главной с помощью союзного слова (“which”, если речь идёт о чём-то неодушевлённом, “who”, если речь идёт о человеке, “where”, “how”), а запятая, поставленная после пропущенного фрагмента, ясно укажет на то, что заканчиваться предлогом он не может.
  4. Для подготовки к этому разделу полезно читать , а также научно-популярные статьи и новостные колонки. Выписывайте из них незнакомые слова; при этом старайтесь не браться за словарь сразу, а сначала догадываться об их значении по контексту и только потом проверять свою догадку. Если уровень вашего английского достиг Intermediate – Upper-Intermediate, значение незнакомого слова лучше выяснять не по англо-русскому, а по англо-английскому толковому словарю.
  5. Расширяйте свой словарный запас любыми другими удобными вам способами. На помощь в этом могут придти решебники по ЕГЭ, и , позволяющие запоминать новые слова в наиболее естественном для вас темпе и/или игровой форме.

Грамматика и лексика (Use of English)

Третий раздел, Use of English, проверяет ваше знание грамматики английского языка, смысловых оттенков и сочетаемости слов, словообразовательных средств. Это одновременно и самый простой раздел, поскольку требует минимального приложения творческих сил, и самый сложный, поскольку для правильного его выполнения нужны точные знания.

Задания, входящие в раздел «Грамматика и лексика»

Задание №1 . В первом задании вам даётся текст (или два коротких), в 7 местах которого пропущены слова. Нужные слова указаны справа от пропуска, и вам необходимо использовать их в правильной грамматической форме. У глаголов это обычно означает необходимость поставить их в правильную временную форму, образовать от них пассивный залог или причастие, согласовать с подлежащим. В местоимениях может потребоваться изменить число или сделать их притяжательными. Для прилагательных изменение обычно заключается в образовании правильных степеней сравнения, для существительных – множественного числа.

Задание №2 . Второе задание тоже представляет собой текст с пропусками (в количестве 6), только на этот раз вам придётся образовывать из приведённых рядом слов другие части речи с помощью суффиксов и приставок. Вам нужно будет правильно определить, какая часть речи требуется в тексте, и использовать средства словообразования, подходящие по смыслу.

Задание №3 . Данное задание – единственное в разделе, где можно делать выбор из предложенных вариантов (четырёх), но это не мешает ему быть самым сложным. Вам даётся текст с 7 пропущенными словами, а ниже вы увидите по четыре слова, которыми можно заполнить каждый из пропусков. Эти слова подобраны так, чтобы быть либо сходными по смыслу (разумеется, в их употреблении есть нюансы, на которые и нужно опираться при принятии решения, какое из них использовать в данном случае), либо по написанию, либо по роли, которую они обычно исполняют в тексте. Также в третьем задании может потребоваться вставить нужный предлог или часть фразового глагола.

  1. Для успешной сдачи этого раздела многое нужно просто-напросто заучить любым удобным для вас способом. Рисуйте , изучайте, какие суффиксы используются для образования каждой из частей речи и каково их значение. Внимательно читайте текст, чтобы правильно определить, в какую грамматическую форму вам нужно поставить слово или какую часть речи от него образовать, затем думайте, как именно это сделать.
  2. Заучивая глаголы (например, выписывая незнакомые из текста), всегда учите их вместе с управлением; запоминайте, требуют ли они после себя предлога, и если да, то какого именно. Особенное внимание уделяйте глаголам, требующим предлога, который сложно вывести по смыслу (как, например, «злиться на кого-либо» – “be angry with someone”).
  3. При записывании слов в пропуски тщательно придерживайтесь правил заполнения экзаменационных бланков. Буквы пишите через регулярные интервалы; если ответ состоит из нескольких слов (как, например, в аналитических (составных) формах глаголов) – не делайте пробелов между словами.

Письмо (Writing)

Раздел «Письмо» включает в себя два объёмных задания, на которые отведено 80 минут. Оба задания требуют от экзаменуемого написания текста специфической направленности, которая налагает определённые рамки как на форму, так и на содержание. От вас требуется не только знание английского языка, но и знание характерных особенностей текстов именно такого типа.

Задания, входящие в раздел «Письмо»

Задание №1 . Вашему вниманию будет представлено письмо от иностранного друга или подруги по переписке, где с вами поделятся информацией из их жизни и зададут несколько вопросов. От вас требуется в форме встречного письма длиной 100-140 слов ответить на эти вопросы и задать определённое количество своих на тему, указанную в задании. При этом крайне важно правильно оформить письмо. Делается это по следующей схеме:

  1. В правом верхнем углу укажите друг под другом город, страну и дату написания письма (в формате число/месяц/год). Писать адрес более подробно не нужно! Между страной и датой пропускается одна строчка.
  2. С левой стороны страницы пишем обращение “Dear ___”, куда подставляем имя вашего адресата, после чего ставим запятую.
  3. Несмотря на то, что предыдущая строчка оканчивается запятой, писать начинаем с красной строки и большой буквы. Благодарим собеседника за присланное письмо; можно также извиниться за то, что не сразу сели отвечать, или упомянуть, какие эмоции вызвало у вас письмо.
  4. Отвечаем на вопросы собеседника. При этом можно использовать разговорный стиль и сокращённые грамматические формы слов, восклицательные знаки и многоточия, но от сленга и вульгаризмов следует удержаться.
  5. Задаём собственные вопросы согласно условиям задания.
  6. Завершаем письмо; можно сообщить о причинах, которые мешают написать более объёмное, сказать, что будете ждать ответа, пожелать собеседнику что-либо.
  7. Слева под письмом пишем одну из специальных завершающих шаблонных фраз (“Best regards”, “Lots of love”, “Warm wishes”, и т. д.; при этом нужно учитывать, что некоторые из них подходят только для делового стиля и покажутся слишком формальными для дружеской переписки, а другие, наоборот, будут слишком интимны и потому неуместны). После неё ставим запятую.
  8. Под шаблонной фразой пишем своё имя, не ставя после него точку.

Задание №2 . Второе задание заключается в написании эссе объёмом 200-250 слов на указанную тему. Эссе должно иметь чёткую композицию и включать в себя пять абзацев. Первый и последний абзацы – вступление и заключение, во втором абзаце вы указываете своё мнение по вопросу и приводите аргументы в его пользу, в третьем абзаце – освещаете противоположную точку (или точки) зрения, в четвёртом – объясняете, почему остановились на точке зрения, которую защищаете.

Советы по подготовке и сдаче письменной части ЭГЕ по английскому

  1. Внимательно следите за лимитом слов! Для письма рамки дозволенного составляют 90-154 слова, для эссе – 180-275. Если вы напишете меньше, задание проверяться не будет вообще и вы получите 0 баллов, если больше – не станут проверять всё, что находится за пределами лимита. Таким образом вы потеряете композиционно значимые части, а с ними – и баллы.
  2. Тренируйтесь в написании текстов строго заданного объёма. Проверяйте количество слов самостоятельно; помните, что в письме адрес и подпись тоже включаются в общее число. До некоторой степени можно регулировать количество слов, пользуясь тем, что числительные, записанные цифрами (1990, 234) или как сложное слово через дефис (fifty-nine), считаются одним словом, а записанные в несколько отдельных слов – по их количеству (one thousand nine hundred twenty). Аббревиатуры и краткие грамматические формы (wouldn’t, I’d, it’s), в отличие от их полного написания, тоже засчитываются как одно слово.
  3. Изучите, как правильно писать эссе. Я рассказывала , и приводила на этом сайте.
  4. Создайте свой инструментарий фраз-клише, используемых в эссе и текстах сходного типа для введения идеи, для приведения примера, для противопоставления, для описания причинно-следственной связи, для перехода к другой стороне вопроса.
  5. Тщательно следите за стилем своей письменной речи. В эссе избегайте эмоционально окрашенной лексики и разговорных выражений, в письме – канцелярита.

Говорение (Speaking)

Устная часть ЕГЭ по английскому добровольна и сдаётся отдельно от письменной – в другой день и обычно в другом месте. В отличие от письменного экзамена, сдавать говорение вы будете по одному или несколько человек в специально оборудованном для этого помещении. Вам выделят гарнитуру (наушники + микрофон) для записи и прослушивания ваших ответов, и под надзором экзаменатора вы начнёте выполнение демонстрируемых на экране заданий, опираясь на инструкции программы.

В отличие от письменной части экзамена, вы не можете свободно распоряжаться отведённым на этот раздел экзамена временем. Выполнять задания вы будете в том порядке, в котором они появляются на экране, и временные рамки, в которые вы можете сделать запись своего ответа, крайне строги. Всего устная часть экзамена длится 15 минут, и в конце её у вас будет возможность послушать, насколько качественными получились аудиозаписи. К сожалению, обмануть систему и исправить запоздало замеченную ошибку у вас не получится: перезапись возможна только после обращения к экзаменатору, который должен удостовериться, что дело именно в её качестве.

Задания, входящие в раздел «Говорение»

Задание №1. На это задание вам даётся всего 3 минуты. Полторы из них отводится на то, чтобы вы ознакомились с небольшим (10-15 предложений) текстом, который вам затем придётся прочесть вслух. Важно не только правильно произносить слова, но и придерживаться пауз, задаваемых пунктуацией, а также следить за интонацией. За прочтение текста вам дадут 1 балл.

Задание №2. Во втором задании вам покажут проиллюстрированное рекламное объявление. Согласно условиям задания, вас интересует товар и/или услуга, о которых идёт речь в объявлении (это может быть абонемент в бассейн или спортзал, экскурсия, ночёвка в отеле и т. п.), и вам нужно выяснить об этом некоторые подробности. Информация, которую вам нужно получить, записана в пять пунктов под объявлением. Вам даётся полторы минуты на то, чтобы сориентироваться, а потом вы должны будете задать по вопросу на каждый из пунктов. На запись одного вопроса вам отведено ровно 20 секунд.

Задание №3. В третьем задании вам покажут три фотографии, из которых нужно выбрать одну и, спустя полторы минуты, сжато описать её. Важно не забывать следовать легенде в условиях задания. От года к году она может меняться; в последнем ЕГЭ она заключалась в том, что все фотографии были взяты из вашего личного фотоальбома, и вам нужно описать одну из них другу.

При описании важно придерживаться формы ответа. Начните с “I’ve chosen photo number…”, чтобы указать, какое именно фото описываете, после чего расскажите о нём, опираясь на предоставленный вам в задании план. Важно от него не отклоняться и отвечать максимально сжато, поскольку на ответ вам даётся всего две минуты, и если не прозвучит вся информация, о которой просят, это будет стоить вам баллов. Всего за это задание можно получить 7 баллов.

Задание №4. Четвёртое задание устной части экзамена похоже на предыдущее, только в нём вам покажут две картинки, и говорить вам придётся об обеих из них. Вам дадут полторы минуты на подготовку, а потом за 2 минуты вам нужно будет сравнить их, придерживаясь приведённого в задании плана. Описать, что происходит на каждой из них, будет недостаточно; вы должны найти их сходства и отличия (или, скорее, сходства или отличия того, что изображено на них), а также поговорить о своём отношении к ним. За это задание вы тоже можете получить 7 баллов.

Советы по подготовке и сдаче устной части ЭГЕ по английскому

  1. Из-за жёстких временных рамок устной части экзамена и давления на психику, которое она оказывает, вам обязательно нужно потренироваться иметь дело именно с этими заданиями и на этих условиях. Сделать это можно или на этом сайте .
  2. Помните, что сдача перед компьютером весьма отличается от сдачи перед экзаменатором, поскольку вы не сможете ориентироваться на реакцию собеседника. К данному формату необходимо привыкнуть.
  3. Записывайте свою речь на диктофон (можно использовать встроенный в ваш смартфон) и прослушивайте результат. Если у вас есть гарнитура для голосового общения или ноутбук со встроенным микрофоном, можно также обратиться к онлайн-ресурсу Vocaroo Voice Recorder , с помощью которого вы легко можете сделать запись и затем скачать её себе для дальнейшего использования. Так вы сможете привыкнуть к звуку своего голоса, отследить очевидные со стороны ошибки произношения, потренироваться укладываться в отведённое время.
  4. Выучите устойчивые речевые конструкции, которые используются при сравнении или противопоставлении. Также можно выучить , которые не привносят в текст дополнительный смысл, но которыми можно заполнить паузу, пока вы обдумываете следующую часть своего ответа (“actually”, “indeed”, “in fact”, “as far as I know/can judge”).
  5. Постарайтесь не переживать и не теряться, если поняли, что сделали ошибку. Грамматические ошибки и неправильное произношение слов нормальны в речи, и если их не так уж много, балл за них не снижается.     VIRGINIA

    221b and Sherlock Holmes

    “I have it here in my museum” said Sherlock Holmes in the “Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.”

    The (1)… of the Sherlock Holmes Museum to the public on 27 March 1990 was an event which should have happened several decades earlier. 221b Baker Street is, after all, the world’s (2)… address because of its long (3)… with the great detective.

    People (4)… to Sherlock Holmes and to his friend Doctor Watson for the last 100 years, but now it is possible to see where and how they (5)… in Victorian times!     Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (1)… at 221b Baker Street from about 1881–1904. 221b was on the (2)… floor of a (3)… house, Mrs. Hudsom was the landlady. There were 17 steps from the ground floor hallway to the first floor study which Holmes and Watson (4)… Holmes’ bedroom was at the rear, (5)… the study.

    We know from Dr. Watson’s descriptions that the study (6)… Baker Street “(7)… by two broad windows” and that it was quite small: on one occasion, Holmes (8)… from his bedroom and (9)… one spring across the study to close the curtains and on another occasion, a man who entered their study was so large he almost filled (10)… “little room”.

    There are many other details and illustrations of the rooms in the adventures which first (11)… in the Strand Magazine in 1891 and visitors will recognize these while (12)… around the house.

    Doctor Watson’s bedroom was on the (13)… floor next to Mrs. Hudson’s room and it overlooked an open yard at the rear of the house. These rooms (14)… today as exhibit rooms. In Dr. Watson’s room, visitors can browse through literature, paintings, photographs and newspapers of the period while in Mrs. Hudson’s room; the centre stage (15)… by a magnificent bronze bust of Mr. Holmes. Memorabilia from the adventures and a selection of letters written to and from Mr. Holmes are also on display in this room.

    The Museum’s interesting and rather quaint souvenir shop (16)… on the (17)… floor where the maids used to live.     First Landing/Seashore State Park (1)… right here in Virginia Beach (2)… of about 3000 acres. The park provides a protected area where many species of flora and fauna are (3)…, and where visitors can observe them in (4)… natural (5)… Rabbits, squirrels, and raccoons are just some of the animals you may encounter. There is also an abundance of different species of crabs, oysters and frogs. The bird population is abundant as well, with osprey, great blue herons, egrets, owls and pelicans, just to name a few.     There are also numerous activities and facilities to enjoy, from hiking to biking, to picnicking, camping, boating and fishing.     WESTMINSTER ABBEY

    An (1)… masterpiece of the (2)… to sixteenth centuries, Westminster Abbey also presents a unique pageant of (3)… history – the Confessor’s Shrine, the tombs of Kings and Queens, and countless memorials to the famous and the great. It (4)… the (5)… for every Coronation since 1066 and for numerous other Royal occasions. Today it is still a church (6)… to regular worship and to the (7)… of great events in the life of the nation. Neither a cathedral nor a parish church, Westminster Abbey is a “royal peculiar” under the (8)… of a Dean and Chapter, subject only to the Sovereign.

    Buried in the North Aisle of the Chapel of Henry VII is Elizabeth Tudor (died 1603). She (9)… in the same vault as (10)… half-sister Mary. The monument contains a white marble effigy which is a (11)… likeness of the queen. The great glory of the Henry VII Chapel – completed in 1519 -- is the vaulted roof, an outstanding example of this spectacular Tudor Style of architecture. Since 1725, the Chapel (12)… as the Chapel of the Order of the Barth. Gaily coloured banners, crests and mantling of the Knights adorn the 16th century wooden stalls, beneath the seats of which (13)… beautifully misericords.     Chapel of St Edward the Confessor. The Abbey (17)… 28 December, 1065. Its (18)…, the (19)… King Edward, (20)… too ill to be present and died a few days afterwards.

    Two hundred years (21)… Henry III began (22)… the Abbey to house a shrine worthy of the Saint. It is this building you see today. Buried near the shrine are five Kings and four Queens.

    The oak Coronation Chair (23)… for King Edward I by Master Walter of Durham. It (24)… to hold the ancient stone of Scone seized from the Scots in 1296.

    Location. At the south end of Whitehall and (25)… onto Parliament Square, Westminster Abbey and the nearby Palace of Westminster, (26)… well by public transport.

    Nearest stations are: Rail – Victoria and Waterloo; Underground – St. James’s Park and Westminster. Numerous bus services run to Parliament Square and Victoria Station.

    For Coronations the chair (27)… to a position in the Sanctuary. Since 1308 it has been used at the Coronation of every sovereign. Only two (Edward V and Edward VIII) (28)… never.

    The tomb to which Poets’ Corner owes (29)… origin is that of Geoffrey Chau с er, the (30)… great English poet. He was buried in the Abbey with a simple memorial in 1400. The present more imposing tomb (31)… in 1556.

    THE ABBEY LIFE AND WITNESS TODAY

    Nine hundred years ago, Westminster Abbey (1)… a Benedictine Monastery, offering the (2)… Benedictine hospitality to (3)… visitors. Today, it has to seek new ways of (4)… a hospitable welcome to the millions of (5)… who come to it every year from all parts of the world. Worship and (6)… remain the primary function of the Abbey community. An (7)… ministry of preaching and teaching, within the Abbey itself and in the (8)… world, (9)… here.
